Speed is a trust signal
A visitor on a phone, standing in a parking lot, gives your site about three seconds. If the menu or the phone number isn't on screen by then, they go back to the search results and tap the next business. Google measures this (Core Web Vitals) and uses it in ranking; customers measure it by leaving.
Test it properly
Run your homepage and your most important page through PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Look at Largest Contentful Paint (should be under 2.5 seconds) and Cumulative Layout Shift (under 0.1). Test on a real phone on cellular, not just your office Wi-Fi.
The usual culprits
- Huge images. A 4 MB photo straight from a phone is the #1 cause. Resize to the display size and compress (WebP).
- Page builders and too many plugins. Each adds scripts and styles to every page.
- Sliders and video backgrounds above the fold.
- Cheap shared hosting with slow server response.
- Too many fonts and third-party scripts (chat widgets, trackers, embeds).
- No caching or CDN.
Fixes in order of impact
- Compress and resize every image; lazy-load the ones below the fold.
- Turn on caching (a good host does this) and a CDN.
- Remove plugins you don't use; replace heavy ones.
- Replace the hero slider with one strong image and a headline.
- Move to managed WordPress hosting if server response is over 600 ms.
- Load third-party scripts after the page is interactive, or drop them.
What good looks like
Under two seconds to interactive on 4G, the phone number and primary action visible without scrolling, and a layout that doesn't jump as it loads. That's the standard every site we launch is tested against.
